I’ve been working with Ceph and Openstack many years and I can say: PetaSAN’s Ceph implementation is quite good. Also the way it uses Consul, Gluster and LIO is very smart.

PetaSAN is storage like it should be: secure, scalable, fast and open. We replaced a proprietary and market-leading storage virtualization solution by PetaSAN and noticed an increased overall performance for our mixed environment. In the past we suffered a lot by the performance impact of RAID levels and their re-buildings. Unlike other solutions PetaSAN does not use RAID but replication. While PetaSAN offers an easy interface to manage your storage, it does not prevent you to take a look underneath and manage things by command line. Nonetheless PetaSAN helped us to reduce storage costs by 83% because of using standard hardware instead of proprietary storage systems.

PetaSAN gave us an option to harness the speed of the local SSD’s, while having access to Storage DRS as well, helping get closer to having the best of both worlds (speed & easier manageability) while not busting the budget.  The release of PetaSAN 2.0 brought ceph bluestore into the picture, which has increased the disk access speed to the point where an end user wouldn’t be able to tell if the vm was running on the host with direct access to the SSD, or if it’s running in a cluster of servers with shared Datastore(s).
